On December 18th Sony removed Cyberpunk 2077 from their online PlayStation store. It won’t be an overstatement to say Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most awaited game ever. After 8 years of development, cyberpunk had a disastrous launch. The game had so many issues and bugs ruining the overall experience. Especially on the base version of PS4 and Xbox One, where the Frame rate drops even to single-digit the game is unplayable. On 17th December a week after the launch, Sony announced that they will remove Cyberpunk from their store and offered refunds.
This can literally be seen as a temporary ban on Cyberpunk 2077 from Sony’s Playstation Store. Sony also announced a full refund to anyone who purchased the game from PS Store. Refunds were also announced by Xbox and various game store companies like GameStop. While Refunds are certainly good news, removing one of the most awaited games during the holiday season annoyed many gamers especially those who wanted to enjoy Cyberpunk on their PS4 Pro or PS5. The game was a mess on base ps4 but it was a much smoother experience on Ps4 pro and PS5.
Digital Console disadvantage
If you are one of those who bought a shiny new PS5 Digital edition then you have no option to buy a Cyberpunk 2077 right now. The ban “Might” be lifted once the cyberpunk passes the quality check for base PS4. Those who have a console that can run Physical games namely Ps4 pro and PS5 (Disc version) can still enjoy Cyberpunk 2077 by getting a Physical copy of the game from any store.
Why Sony Banned Cyberpunk From Their Playstation Stores?
The Simple answer you one can assume is the poor performance on base PS4. But during the life of Ps4, there were many such games that performed as badly as Cyberpunk. Fallout 76, No Man Sky, even sony’s own Days Gone didn’t had the smoothest of launches. What could have forced sony to make such a bold decision is the refund announcement from CDPR.
On December 14th Cyberpunk’s Developer CD Projekt red apologized to the gamers and promised refunds. After the announcement, about Cyberpunk 2077 refund got viral among disappointed fans It is speculated Sony got a huge number of requests for refunds on the PS Store. Frustrated by the massive number of refund requests might have caused sony to take such a decision.
The Whole saga of Sony banning/removing Cyberpunk 2077 taught a very valuable lesson to those who opted for Digital Console. Digital Console surely comes a little cheaper but the availability of games remains in the hand of the parent company. This highlights some major Digital Console disadvantage.
